Three Causes of Tooth Loss and How You Can Prevent Them

Posted .

There are several reasons why a tooth can be lost, and today we are going to look at three of them and how you can prevent them from occurring. Losing a tooth is not only unsightly, but it can be bad for your oral health and cause misalignment. So whenever possible, our dentist, Dr. Omar Damji, attempts to save damaged teeth. Let’s take a look!

Cause #1: Gum disease. When plaque isn’t removed from your teeth daily it can irritate the gums. Once it hardens into tartar–a toxic substance–it can lead to infection in the gum pockets. Once gum disease spreads to the underlying bone, if left untreated, it can result in loose teeth or even tooth loss. What can you do? Maintain good daily oral hygiene habits and keep with all scheduled bi-annual dental cleanings with your dentist.

Cause #2: Tooth decay. Tooth decay thrives with poor oral hygiene habits, relying on an unbalanced, high-carbohydrate and sugar-filled diet, and missing regularly scheduled dental cleanings. If a cavity isn’t treated, it can spread and damage the tooth to the extent where an extraction might be necessary. What can you do? Develop excellent daily oral hygiene habits, consume a balanced diet, see your dentist regularly to detect and treat any tooth decay before it grows.

Cause #3: Oral injury. Teeth can be lost due to oral injury, especially if you regularly participate in high-impact sports or recreational activities that can knock out one or more teeth. What can you do? Wearing an athletic guard is a simple, effective way to protect against this form of tooth loss.
